Music is a tough business, but it certainly is rewarding. Artists put themselves out there every year releasing new music anxious about whether the world will love or hate their new music.
Billboard has released a list of the top-paid musicians of 2020 and here is a look at the numbers!
MUSIC MONEY MAKERS OVERVIEW
The COVID-19 pandemic has done a number on some of our favourite artists with some of them taking home lower amounts of money than other years. Collectively all the artists took home a whopping $387 million which is significantly lower than 2019 which was $969 million.
Artists had to find other ways of making money because many weren’t able to tour because of the pandemic. However even though some took the time to record new music, many did still make a significant amount of money.
1. TAYLOR SWIFT – $23.8 MILLION
Taylor Swift is Billboard’s number one money maker of 2020. The American pop star took a total of $10.6 million just for streaming with $10 million coming in from music sales.
The singer released her Folklore album in 2020. Interestingly enough, Swift wasn’t on Billboard’s list of 2019 money makers, but she came out on top in 2020.
2. POST MALONE – $23.2 MILLION
Post Malone was one of the few artists who got to tour to share his music just before the world was shut down in March 2020.
Most of the Better Now rapper’s revenue came from touring earning him $12.4 million for the tour. $8.1 million came from music streaming although his last album release was in 2019.
3. CELINE DION – $17.5 MILLION
Celine Dion is the top earning artist in the touring division, generating a total of $17 million.
The Canadian singer had grossed a total of $49.8 million in ticket sales for 23 shows around the world before the world came to a halt because of the pandemic.
4. EAGLES – $16.3 MILLION
This is the Grammy-award winning rock band’s first time on Billboard’s money makers list. The band played 10 shows in 2020 taking home $11.4 million for solely touring.
According to Billaboard the rock band generated almost $4.9 million in income from their masters which makes up for almost 30% of their earnings.
5. BILLIE EILISH – $14.7 MILLION
A large amount of Billie Eilish’s total earnings were from streaming bringing in a total of $5.9 million. The ocean eyes hitmaker played three shows in 2020.
Her and her brother and part-time collaborator FINNEAS scooped a total of $5.7 million for publishing.
BEYOND BILLBOARD’S TOP 5
Other artists who made Billboard’s list are Drake, with a solid $14.2 million,The Weeknd with $10.4 million, BTS with $8.9 million and The Lumineers with $6.8 million.
More artists making the list were Fleetwood Mac with $6.6 million, Kanye West with $6.3 million, Justin Bieber with $6.22 million, and Ed Sheeran with $5.66 million.
